Brothers and Sisters,
The eboard has been working hard on exploring options for the wage opener. We have unanimously agreed to cancel the current March 19 – March 23 vote and postpone the vote for the TA’ed Article 13 vote to a more appropriate time.
The rational is composed of many factors and strategic risks analysis. To summarize, 14 days ago we announced the vote and the strategic plan to propose the accelerated 2018 fire assessment and bring to the forefront the needs of Brevard County Fire Rescue for the October 1, 2021 contract.
During that time Brevard County had an approximate 3-4% unemployment rate, record construction starts, and revealed the infrastructure of the five-year plan including new stations, personnel, and recruitment / retention efforts. We have the support of the Brevard Board of County Commissioners.
The political, social, and economic environment has changed so drastically during the last 14 days we cannot even publish counter statistics to the above fire-year plan. This uncertainty is the main reason for the postponed vote. No one can say what opportunities we will have in the near future but Brevard County was moving at a pace that we could predict the next few months and years. Today we cannot predict the next hour or day.
As always, please reach out to the eboard or myself to discuss your thoughts, to ask questions, to hear more about the decision-making process, or to express your concerns.
To be clear, nothing has been altered or deleted from the contract. The contract ratification has been removed from the agenda and will need to be added to an agenda at a later date before Oct 1, 2020. We will need to vote on the TA’ed article 13 at some point before we can change, re-negotiate, or put the contract into motion. All existing MOU’s will remain in place.
Your safety and well-being along with your family’s is your Unions number one priority and it will remain so as we still continue to work on funding sources and financial stability for our members. This is an ambitious task so I do ask you to be patient with some of your requests and be sympathetic to the community we serve.
